Storm Recap For SW Montana

Posted: Updated:

This storm system has produced moderate to heavy rain/snow across SW Montana and many precipitation records were set today.

Bozeman MSU reported total precipitation of 0.94" from 4 pm Tuesday to 4 pm Wednesday. This is a new record for today's date. Old record was 0.67" in 1898.

Townsend also set a 24 hour total precipitation value of 0.98". Old record was 0.79" in 1987.

Wisdom reporting 1.12" for today and that smashed the old record of 0.60" in 1944.

Plenty of heavy wet snow has also been noted across SW Montana and a few records to share here as well. MSU estimated around 5" and for today's date the old record snowfall was only 0.20" of snow in 1977. Wisdom topping the list with 9" of snow and that surpasses the old record for today of 2" set in 1938. No official report for Butte, however, snowfall reports around 6" in the lower end of the valley near the airport and up in the Highland Mountains around a foot of snow has been estimated.

As I write this report the storm continues to produce widespread rain and snow. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories continue into Thursday morning. An additional 0.25" to 0.50" could fall overnight into Thursday morning and that could put most of SW Montana between 1" to 1.5" of total moisture from this storm.

Travel concerns continue tonight for mountain passes as temperatures fall below freezing and wet roads could become icy for Thursday's morning commute. Snow loading on trees is another concern for possible power outages so watch for falling branches tonight. Finally the biggest concern I see is possible flooding by the end of the week into the weekend. Rivers were running very strong and some near flood stage prior to this storm. Most mountain ranges have seen a foot or more of heavy wet snow and most valley floors have very saturated soils. At this time there are no flood highlights for our area from the National Weather Service, however, be prepare for possible runoff issues by this weekend into early next week.

Watch the attached on demand short video as I recap all the local storm reports and take a look at the forecast through early tomorrow morning to show you how much more rain/snow is possible.

Please join me tonight at 10 pm on KXLF and KBZK for updates on the short term forecast and for a look at the local 10 day forecasts.
