Obituary: Barbara Mae Asleson

Posted: Updated:

Barbara Mae Asleson of Bozeman, Montana, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 9, 1922, in Stoughton, Wisconsin, to Norwegian parents, Albert and Milla Amble. The younger of two children, she grew up in Stoughton and graduated from Stoughton High in 1938 at the age of 16.

After graduation she went to work at the local soda fountain because they wouldn’t allow anyone under 18 into the nursing school she planned to attend. The nursing school, a three-year (including summers) program took place in Madison, Wisconsin, for the first two years, then Chicago for the last clinical year, graduating with her RN degree in 1943.

She married Johan Asleson on October 12, that same year. Joe was a Naval flight instructor and together they lived in Florida (she hated the bugs), New Orleans, Louisiana (she loved the culture), and Norman, Oklahoma, among others with Barb utilizing her nursing degree all along.

In 1947 Joe took a job at Montana State College in Bozeman teaching soils. Together they celebrated the birth of a son, Stephen Johan, in 1951 followed by daughters, Jo Ann in 1953, and Carol Jane in 1956.

Barbara worked as a nurse beginning with private duty and eventually joining Bozeman Deaconess, where she worked until her retirement in 1975.  Along with working and raising a family, she was hostess to many university functions.

Barb was a longtime active member of Hope Lutheran Church, Chapter F, P.E.O., Sons of Norway and bridge clubs. She enjoyed camping with her family, golf, bowling, painting, specifically rosemaling, and making lefse, krumkake, rosettes and many other Norwegian goodies.

Barb was preceded in death by Johan, her husband of 65 years; daughter, Jo; her brother, Mervin; and her parents.  She is survived by son, Stephen of Flagstaff, Arizona; and daughter, Carol of Bozeman, Montana.

Services to be held later this Summer.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
