Obituary: Marilyn Flikkema

Posted: Updated:

Marilyn Flikkema, 84, of Manhattan, MT, went to be with her Lord and Savior May 1, 2017, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease and other health issues.  She was born August 21, 1932, to John D. and Cena (TeHennepe) LeFebre in Manhattan where she lived most of her life. She attended Manhattan Christian School and then some high school years at Lynden Christian School.

As a teenager, Marilyn worked at her Dad’s store, The Amsterdam Store.  She also cleaned houses and was a nanny for several families in the community. For a while she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher in Gallatin Gateway.  She married Henry John Flikkema on June 25, 1952, in Churchill, MT, and they were happily married for almost 65 years. She was a life-time member of Manhattan Christian Reformed Church. Early in their marriage, Marilyn and Henry began with potato farming, and later switched to dry land grain farming. Life was busy on the farm where Marilyn’s skills as a wife, mother and homemaker enhanced the family life of her husband and their five children.  Her family was very dear to her, and she loved spending time with them playing games, canning and baking.  Her grandchildren always looked forward to the time spent at Grandma’s house.  Marilyn also enjoyed camping, taking rides, playing the piano, and embroidering towels.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, David; son, Edwin Henry; brothers, John and Gary; and sisters, Kathy and Mildred.  Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Helen (Greg) Meaney; sons, Darrel (Debbie) Flikkema, Randy (Myla) Flikkema, and Calvin (Jill) Flikkema; sister, Linda (Clarence) Sterenberg; brothers, Don (Meribeth) LeFebre, Lee (Betty) LeFebre, and Larry (Esther) LeFebre; brother-in-law, Stan Zienstra; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Because of her love of music and children, memorials may be made in Marilyn’s name to Manhattan Christian Reformed Church, 7950 Churchill Rd., Manhattan, MT 59741, for music ministry and nursery improvements.

A special thank you to the Churchill Retirement Home and Hospice of Bozeman Health for the loving care they gave to Marilyn.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson and again Monday, May 8 from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church.  Graveside services will be held Monday, May 8,  at 10 a.m. at Churchill Cemetery followed by memorial services at 11 a.m. at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church.
