Obituary: Keith Desmond Crosbie

Keith Desmond Crosbie passed away quietly Friday, April 14, 2017, in his home in Manhattan, MT. He was born December 29, 1923, in Porus, Jamaica.  His parents were Desmond and Maud Crosbie.  Keith came to the U. S. in 1944 as a student.  He graduated from a Junior College in Jamaica and received a B. A. from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. He subsequently became a teacher of foreign languages at Walla Walla High School.  He married Joan Dorothy Monroe in Walla Walla on November 10, 1945. They have three children, Mark Desmond of Missoula, MT; Paul Frederic, wife Cindy, of Belgrade, MT; and Daphne Ann, husband Jack Stults, of Helena, MT.

After leaving Walla Walla, Keith was employed by the Montana Office of Public Instruction as an NDEA Supervisor of Foreign Languages. While in Montana he received a Master’s Degree in Hispanic Literature from the University of Montana in Missoula.  Keith and Joan were residents of Olympia, WA, from 1971. Keith retired from the Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1989, where he was Coordinator of Bilingual Education and Foreign Languages during that time. In 2012, Keith and Joan moved to Manhattan, MT, to be closer to their family.

Keith’s interest in Spanish was lifelong. He studied at the University of Mexico, the University of Puerto Rico (Rio Piedras), and spent a year in Peru as a Fulbright grantee. The family participated in every sojourn.  Over the years, Keith belonged to many foreign language organizations, both state and national, and his other big interests would include the R.V. life, English poetry of the 18th & 19th centuries, and the family.  Keith and Joan retired in 1989, she from Patrick’s Floor Covering as office manager, he from OSPI.

Keith is survived by his wife and children; his granddaughter, Sarah; and his two great grandsons, Eli and Adam, of Bend, OR.

A gathering to celebrate Keith's life will be held at Parkhaven Retirement, 100 Hamilton Court, Manhattan, MT, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday April 22, 2017.
