GREAT FALLS -

The Montana Senate has approved a bill increasing taxes for tobacco and e-cigarette, or vaping, products on Thursday.

Legislators say the tax will create an estimated $70 million dollars to put toward health care services and will encourage users to quit products that are harmful to their health.

However, the action is causing frustration and anger by vape shop owners.

They say that by including vaping in the bill, the legislature is actually harming an industry that is helping tobacco users switch to what they call a healthier alternative.

Sean Glenn, owner of Vaporology Vape Shop located 21 2nd St S, says the tax will shut down his business and others across the state, and deter hundreds of his customers from using a product the customers say has made them happier and healthier since switching from tobacco.

Glenn explained, “A bottle of e-juice will cost anywhere from $20.00 to $22.00 dollars typically. With that tax, with the 74% tax, that price is going to go to $35.00 to $40.00 dollars. Which is really going to drive people to not want to spend that much money, but they’re going to look at that $8.00 or $9.00 dollar pack of cigarettes, it’s gonna be a lot more enticing. They’re gonna buy that product that’s proven to cause health detriment and avoid the product that’s ultimately probably a better alternative.”

The Montana House may not act on the bill by mid-April. Glenn says Vape shop owners and advocates plan to travel to Helena to testify against the measure.
