Doris K. Sandquist, 100, passed away on March 26, 2017, at Elsie’s Assisted Living in Belgrade, MT. She was born on November 1, 1916, to Will and Laura Brainard at their home north of Belgrade.

She and her ten siblings all attended the Durham country school through eighth grade. They either rode horseback or in a horse-drawn cart on their three-mile commute to school each day.  She attended Manhattan High School, graduating in 1934, she earned a teaching certificate from Eastern Montana College in Billings and later graduated from Montana State University.

When World War II broke out she and one of her sisters abandoned their jobs and moved to Seattle to help out the government.  In Seattle, she learned Morse code and tapped out messages to military bases in Alaska.

Doris married Springhill resident, Bud Sandquist, in 1954 and moved back to his family ranch. The pair adopted two kids, Jim and Jean, in 1962, and ranched until Bud passed away in 1998. She also taught in both Springhill and Belgrade schools over the years.

Doris enjoyed playing bridge, she was a member of the same bridge club for over 50 years.  She was a member of Eastern Star, Montana Cow Belles, the Montana Teachers Association, and the Springhill Community Women’s Club.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jim, in 1992; her husband, Bud, in 1998; and all but one of her siblings.
