Obituary: Frances Louise Ross

Posted: Updated:

Frances Louise Ross went to her heavenly home to be with her Savior and beloved husband, Jim, on February 27, 2017 at the age of 921Ž2, while in the loving arms of her family. She lived her life as an independent, hard working person who mowed her own lawn and took great joy in painting, crafts, cake decorating, and gardening while always helping others whenever the opportunity arrived.

Frances was born in Moundville, Missouri on August 3, 1924 to Roxie and Rosamae (Lively) Gillespie. Her parents moved to Bozeman where Frances’s father, Roxie, ran a shoe repair shop on Main Street for decades.

Frances attended Gallatin High School and later graduated from the Western Union School in Stockton, CA, to become a telegrapher during WWII. She worked exclusively for Western Union sending coded messages for the U.S. military around the world.

While there, she married Eugene Hardin in 1944. After the war, they resided in Rantoul, Illinois until they divorced. She gave birth to two boys, Arnie and Dennis.  Frances returned to Bozeman where she worked for the Montana Power Company.

Frances later moved to Seattle where she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Ross, while enlisting her son, Arnie, into the Navy.  Jim was a Pearl Harbor Survivor, Navy recruiter, and WWII veteran of the Pacific Fleet. They were married in 1962, purchased a small farm in Missouri, and ran an electrical business and appliance store. They adopted two boys, Jesse Ross and Jeffery Ross, and moved to Clyde Park, Montana. Frances served as a Boy Scout den mother and Jim worked as an electrician for the railroad. Today, Jesse is a Master electrician; Jeffery a Master plumber; Arnie a retired career Navy veteran and Electronic Engineer on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise; and Dennis a 39-year Bozeman Realtor.

Frances has been an active member of Eastern Star and White Shrine for 50+ years, where she loved her friends dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James “Jim”; and brothers, William and Dawsey “Tiny” Gillespie. She is survived by her sons, Arnie (Diane) Hardin of Graham, WA, Dennis (Gloria) Hardin of Bozeman, MT, Jesse (Dineen) Ross, and Jeffery (Danette) Ross of Livingston, MT; step-daughter, Mary-Jo Ross of Tyler, TX; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and many wonderful friends.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 6, at Shields Valley United Methodist Church in Clyde Park, with Funeral Services to start at 11:30 A.M.  Interment will take place at 3:00 P.M. at Gallatin Valley Sunset Memorial Gardens on the Frontage Road in Bozeman.

Memorials may be sent to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Spokane, WA, (509)455-7844, shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
