Obituary: Vicki McHenry Bredin

Posted: Updated:

Vicki McHenry Bredin grew angel wings and left this life on December 18, 2016, whilst visiting her hometown of Bozeman, MT. Her 24,489 days of life began on December 1, 1949, when she was the first-born child of Frank and Rosa McHenry.

‘Ms. McHenry’ proved to be a change-making citizen both through her creativity as an award-winning teacher and innovative environmental educator at Willson Middle School and an active Girl Scout Leader with the Hawthorn troop. In 1978 she received a Rotary scholarship to complete her Masters in Education in Sydney, Australia, where she met her husband Robert, also a teacher.

The pair married in Bozeman on January 17, 1981, and Vicki moved to Australia later that year. She continued an exceptional teaching career at Tara Anglican School for Girls for 27 years before becoming an education lecturer at Macquarie, Notre Dame and Australian Catholic Universities for the remainder of her career.

Mother to two charismatic children, Kristian and Taylor, Vicki along with Robert became very involved with many local community groups including the Girl Guides, Parramatta Evening College, Bombers Football Club and Rouse Hill Rotary. She was an exceptional fundraiser and had a real presence in her local community.

Vicki remained close with many family and friends back in the U.S., particularly her sister, Sandra, and brother-in-law, Michael. She adored her son-in-law, Nicholas, and Taylor’s girlfriend, Ashleigh, and enjoyed hosting family events galore – no Australian or American holiday ever went uncelebrated in her home.

Vicki’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, December 22 at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service with viewing from 10 am. to 1:30 p.m. and a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. A wake will follow at Grand Avenue Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, please donate online to Vicki’s favourite cause at tinyurl.com/vickimchenry. Please celebrate her life with enthusiasm and acts of kindness and dare to be different.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
