Bozeman business ready to win annual commuter challenge

Posted: Updated:

Throughout the month of May, BikeWalk Montana is challenging folks to get out of their cars to get to work.  “We're a sales company and so everyone is always competing on the sales aspect of things and so we like to see who can rack the most miles.” Trade Risk Guaranty employee Tyler Zaichkin said.

Trade Risk Guaranty or TRG in Bozeman is one team competing in the annual commuter challenge.  “Why? Oh man, because we sit at our desks all day and it can be torture so any excuse to get out and walk and ride your bike is fun,” TRG Team Captain Travis Smith said.

Smith normally does not ride his bike around the office, but took up the chance for this story.

The commuter challenge is based on participating percentage, so 10 people biking one mile gets a better score than one person biking 10 miles.

TRG has logged more than 100 miles so far, with more than 40 employees signed up.

“Hopefully we have all 50 by the end of the month,” Smith said.

The Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board (BABAB) is promoting the friendly competition.

This year marks the first statewide commuter challenge, where Bozeman is competing with other cities around Montana.

“I think the goal is to have people just try biking to work. It's a lot easier than people think and you'll enjoy it, and save money and be healthy,” BABAB Member Dillon Warn said.

It's not just biking.

You can earn points by walking or using public transportation to get to work.

“So some of us have been walking in,” Zaichkin said.

“We're all pretty stoked,” TRG employee Nick Esposito said.

Nearly 200 teams are signed up so far.

Right now, TRG and Montana State University are leading the state and locals say Bozeman can take first place.

“We're up against companies in Helena and Missoula but there's no reason we can't win it,” Smith said.

The challenge is free, open to anyone and runs through May 31st.
