LIVINGSTON -

Donations are pouring into the Stafford Animal Shelter in Livingston after a break-in earlier this month.

"I came to work early that day and opened the door and the whole place was a mess," said Executive Director Steven Leach. "They kicked in the door, all the files were dumped, all the stuff from the cupboards was all on the floor."

People in the community and beyond are helping the Stafford Animal Shelter protect itself from another attack.

The shelter was burglarized the night of February 5. The vandals made off with cash and computer equipment, but fortunately, none of the animals were hurt.

Since then, people in the community and beyond have donated around $2,000 to help the Stafford Animal Shelter protect itself from another attack. "The number of people who donated to Stafford was mind-boggling," said Leach.

In addition, the Human Society of the United States is giving the shelter an emergency grant of $2,000. Leach said the money will go towards repairs and purchasing a new surveillance system to make the shelter more secure. They hope to have the security system in place by the end of the month.

Leach told us last year, Stafford took in 1,000 stray or homeless animals and found permanent homes for 96 percent of them.
