Firing a rifle at a target 160 feet away takes a steady hand. Riding a bike 8 miles takes stamina. Combining both takes the athletic skill of a biathlete.

The Rendezvous Ski Trails in West Yellowstone played host this weekend to the 2nd Annual Bicycle Biathlon. Participants were given a brief safety lesson then turned loose on the cross country ski trails of Rendezvous. Each was required to ride five, two-and-a-half kilometer loops, stopping after the first four to fire a 22 caliber rifle at five stationary targets. The first two times laying down, or prone. The next two stops they fired standing. For every target missed, a penalty lap had to be ridden.

Racers competed in one of two categories. The match category is for the experienced, while sport is for the novice. Rifles were provided for the beginners. The match category was won on the men's side by Jon Schafer from Philadelphia, PA, hitting 13 of 20 targets and finishing in a time of 43:45.55. The womens match was won by Bozeman's own Clarissa Were with 12 of 20 and a time of 52:48.86.
