The Bozeman organization Thrive and the Heart of the Valley animal shelter have been teaming up to teach several local children life skills by taking care of dogs.

Friday was graduation day for several local students, who for the last six weeks have been helping care for dogs, walking and training them.

For the students involved in the program, it was a great opportunity to help out the community in a unique way.

"It was fun, and it's, you're doing a good thing and it makes you feel good when you get home," Brandon Kelly said.

"(The students are) able to open up and really learn some important lessons, such as consistency patience through training the dogs," K-9 evaluator and trainer Ben Donoghue said.

"It felt like I was doing something good for the community, and I want to grow up and try to stop animal cruelty and this is one of the things I want to do," Leann Evans said.

The course has been offered for the last several years and on Friday six more students received certificates for completing it.
