Prom dress shopping can be very inconvenient and very costly, but thanks to Bozeman High School's National Honor Society, it doesn't have to be.
For high school girls across the valley it's time to go prom dress shopping, and this year you can get a nice dress for only $10 at the "Prom Closet" at Bozeman High School.
"We've had a lot of customers come in and just look around, and a lot of them are really impressed with how many dresses we have," said NHS member and Bozeman High Student Marina Elliott.
The point of the prom closet project at Bozeman High School is to recycle and redistribute prom dresses to girls who might not otherwise be able to afford to go to prom.
"You want to be green, you want to reuse, reduce, recycle," said NHS president and Bozeman High student Ben Dickensheets. "But also at the same time, prom doesn't have to cost $300 to get a dress and that's another big reason we're doing this."
Most of us are well aware of how expensive prom can be.
"The ability for a girl to come get a $10 dress that's just as beautiful as a $200 one that's new off the rack is just great," Elliott said.
Students who donate a dress get to shop in the prom closet for free. Around 120 formal dresses have been donated so far including around 40 from the local store After 5 & Weddings.
"We had a generous donation from After 5 & Weddings of like 40 dresses, so super generous there," Dickensheets said.
And the generosity will soon be worn all over the valley.
The student run store is now open from 3:45 to 5 p.m. each day after school, and will be for the rest of the week. The store will be closed during spring break next week, but will open again on March 21 to anyone in the valley.
Donations are always wanted and accepted, even after prom.
The National Honor Society doesn't know quite yet what the money they make will be used for.
To help out, After 5 & Weddings is collecting donations at the store by offering each customer $20 off their prom dress purchase if they bring in a recently worn, clean prom dress to donate to the prom closet.
After 5 & Weddings will also be dropping off coupons toward tuxedo rentals to help the gentlemen out as well.
