Bozeman-based Barnard Construction has won another big contract to remove dams on the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams on the Olympic Peninsula's Elwha River.
The contract is worth almost $27 million.
Project manager Brian Krohmer says that the project won't start until spring or early summer and that the majority of demolition work won't begin until September of next year.
"The biggest challenge is managing the water," Krohmer said. "We have to keep the river flows continuing downstream. We can't block water off, so taking whatever Mother Nature throws at us is probably the biggest challenge."
Krohmer says as far as he knows, there hasn't been any dam removal projects of this size in the country yet, and they're very excited about it.
Barnard Construction already won a contract to dig a tunnel beneath the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan, New York.
