Last week, Montana wildlife officials were considering seeking a special federal permit to allow hunting gray wolves, despite a court order that returned the wolves to the endangered species list.

So we asked KBZK and KXLF online readers what they thought - should the wolf hunts be restored? Although it was close, the majority of poll takers said "No, the hunts should not be restored."

A total of 392 people took the poll with 229 voting "no" to restoring the hunts and 163 voting "yes."

Later, however, the Associated Press reported that wildlife officials decided to drop their proposal for a research hunt for gray wolves. Instead, they are considering proposing a "conservation hunt" to trim wolf numbers to reduce livestock attacks.

"Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks attorney Bob Lane said Friday his agency could not justify carrying out a hunt in the name of research since the goal would have been to reduce the wolf's population, not study it," according to the Associated Press.
