About 70 people sit on the waiting lists for Bozeman's two community gardens at Langohr and Westlake parks. But now, that number is expanding to three.
City Hall garden member Errol Schumann has always liked learning about growing things.
"I grew up veggie gardening, learned it with my mom," Schumann said.
He doesn't mind teaching about it either. Schumann owns Bozeman's New West Landscapes and was asked by the city to help design and facilitate the construction of the 25 plots. It's a collaborative effort, those renting the plots working together to build, and eventually plant the garden.
"Meeting new people, making new connections and learning a million different ways to garden," Schumann said. "But you learn a lot. I'm no expert but I've learned a lot and plan to learn more this year."
Despite the long waiting list on the other community gardens, there are eight standard and one handicapped accessible plot still open at the city hall garden. The plots each contain about 100 square feet of space and rent for $50 with an additional $50 deposit. Those interested can call the assistant to Bozeman's City Manager Brit Fontenot at 582-2258. They will be rented on a first-come, first-served basis.
(As a point of full disclosure, reporter Dan Boyce is renting one of the plots at the City Hall Community Garden, number 19. Come say hi and teach him everything you know about gardening. He needs the help.)
