MHP: Alcohol played role in fatal Hamilton crash

HAMILTON - One man is dead, and another man is in critical condition, after a drunk driving accident that happened near Hamilton early Thursday morning.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Pat Haney says the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was driving south on Eastside Highway near Fairgrounds Road at around 5:19 a.m., when he crossed over the center line and hit a NorthWestern Energy truck.

Trooper Haney says the driver of the pickup truck was intoxicated, speeding and was not wearing his seat belt. He added that road conditions did not factor into the crash that killed the passenger of the pickup truck - who was not wearing his seat belt.

The driver is in critical condition in a Missoula hospital, while Trooper Haney says the driver of the NorthWestern Energy truck was not hurt in the wreck.

Trooper Haney says the occupants in the pickup truck are from the Darby area and are believed to be 19 and 20 years old. Their identities are not being released at this time, pending family notification.

The Montana Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
