A man is out on his own recognizance following a Monday evening incident at Bozeman Deaconess Emergency Room.

Bozeman Police officers as well as Gallatin County Sheriff's Department deputies and MSU police responded to a call at the emergency room Monday night after reports that Randall Dugan, 49, was making threats involving a 45 caliber semi auto pistol according to an affidavit.

"While at the ER he did make threats to others outside of there and part of that was use of obscenities and demonstrating resistive and violent behavior, none of which is acceptable," said Rich Mclane with the Bozeman PD.

McLane says some of the threats were toward the child protective services agency. "The threats were disturbing to the people at the hospital and it seemed as if he was genuine in what he was saying and he was using foul language and being disorderly."

Dugan was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal mischief along with one count of disorderly conduct. He made his initial appearance Tuesday in Bozeman Municipal Court and pleaded not guilty to all three charges, adding that he needs to be there for his two children.

"I need to be there and have money to put a roof over their head." Dugan also explained to the judge that he is permanently disabled. "I'm being diagnosed ...[with] partial lateral sclerosis. It's like Multiple Sclerosis. I'm having seizures all the time."

Which is why he was at the E.R. getting medication when officers responded.

Hospital officials say this was an extremely rare occurrence and there is no reason to feel unsafe while in the E.R. They have 24 hour a day security and controlled access as well.

"We value the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff so if the need was necessary, we might increase staffing or look for ways to make the building more secure," explained Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Safety Officer Leroy Wilson.

The investigation continues as only ammunition was found on Dugan at the hospital. Officials are also continuing to look into the threats made prior to his arrival at the E.R.

Duggan will report to pre-trial services and is due back in court on May 4th.
