A Helena man is dead after a three-vehicle crash on Homestake Pass Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. when a pickup truck was attempting to make an illegal U-turn and was T-boned by another pickup truck traveling eastbound about halfway between Whitehall and Butte, according to the Montana Highway Patrol. When that crash occurred, the truck attempting to make the U-turn scraped the concrete barrier, hit the backend of a compact car, rolled for about 1/2 mile and crashed into some rocks, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

Dan House, 72, of Helena, the driver of the pickup trying to make the U-turn, died at the scene. There were no passengers in that vehicle. Drivers in the other vehicles were not injured.

A lane of traffic was still closed two hours later at 9:15 a.m. Traffic was moving slowly at that time.

In addition to the Montana Highway Patrol, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Whitehall Fire Department and Jefferson Valley Rural Fire Department responded to the scene.
