Gallatin County Commissioners discussed a seasonal closure of Axtell-Anceney Road on Tuesday.
Residents in the Axtell-Anceney Road area are not happy with certain conditions involving the road during the wet season.
"The mudboggers go in there and tear it up and shoot the fence posts off," said Gary Carter who does ranch work in the area. "They throw out beer cans and we're constantly cleaning that up, and we're just asking commissioners to see what they can do about it."
That is why commissioners discussed seasonally closing the road at Tuesday's public meeting. Many residents in the area say that the road becomes a liability during the wet months.
"Mudboggers are a problem," said Amy Waring. "I've seen abandoned vehicles stuck in mud puddles, and they find every mud puddle they can. I've seen fences torn down with vehicles abandoned on private property, and in the spring that road is so wet you can't even walk on it because it sucks your shoes right off your feet."
While many want the road seaonaly closed, others are worried about limited access.
"I fully understand the landowners along that road," said Dave Hargrove. "However, I hope they understand the fact that I need access to be logging and hunting and to access my property as they do, and I am totally against any closure of that road."
"Preference somehow to land owners still being able to access that road, if you would consider that please," said Danny Johnson.
County commissioners are giving landowners in the Axtell-Anceney Road area three weeks to work with Board of Parks staff coordinator Mike Harris to try to come up with a plan that is suitable to everyone. Commissioners said they will find a way to address the situation if a plan is not met within the next three weeks.
