About 50 firefighters across the state turned out this weekend for the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department's third annual fire service training school.
Smoke filled the air in Harrison over the weekend where about 50 firefighters from across Montana turned out for the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department's third annual fire service training school.
Firefighters from as far away as Highwood and Swan Lake were in attendance.
Gallatin Gateway firefighter Jeffrey Martin was one of the trainees in attendance.
"I really enjoy the fire department, giving back to the community, helping people, and it's important to me to be here today to learn more about it, to learn how to be safe, and learn how to be proficient at the task we need to accomplish," Martin said.
Gallatin Gateway Battalion Chief Kevin Lauer has been a firefighter for 25 years. He was one of several trainers at the event.
"We brought three of our firefighters as well as myself to try to do better with our training and learn new things and train with some of our neighbors. It's always good to practice what we do," Lauer said.
The Montana State University training school provided the props needed for the event. It even provided trailers to light on fire.
"We can practice our primary search tactics, life saving tactics, how to be safe in a fire. It's very controlled, yet you do feel the heat and you see the smoke. So it shows the new firefighters especially what to expect when you go into a real working fire," Lauer said.
"We're learning about...engine operations, primary search in the burn trailer and confined space trailer, and learning how to work as part of a team," Martin said.
Training began Friday night and ended Sunday.
