Firefighters have contained a 75-acre human-caused fire that ignited near Ennis over the weekend.
The North Meadow Creek Fire started around 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 in the North Meadow Creek area along the eastern front of the Tobacco Roots Mountains, according to a news release from the Dillon Interagency Dispatch Center.
Firefighters from the MT DNRC, Madison County Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) Stations 1 and 2; Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF, Harrison VFD, Virginia City VFD and Alder VFD worked to contain the fire. Additional assistance came from the Madison County Sheriff's office to conduct evacuations of local area residents; Madison County Disaster and Emergency Services, Smokejumpers from West Yellowstone and three helicopters from DNRC (2) and US Forest Service, the news release states.
While the fire burned mostly in grass and sagebrush, about 2/3 of the area burned was in timber. Firefighters are still working to improve the fireline and extinguish hotspots. Officials anticipate the fire being controlled by Wednesday evening.
