KALISPELL - More details are emerging about a Thursday evening standoff with police in Columbia Falls that ended with a woman being shot by police.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says that Michelle Gentry, 54, of Columbia Falls was shot by a member of the Flathead County SWAT team after a several hour standoff at her residence.
Curry says in a news release that the incident on Eastland Crossroad began at around 2 p.m., when deputies received reports of a reportedly armed suicidal woman.
Deputies were able to contact Gentry by phone and confirmed that she was armed and was suicidal.
Curry adds that she refused to leave the home, and law enforcement then began to negotiate with Gentry, which ended unsuccessfully several hours later.
The Flathead County Sheriff SWAT team responded and set up a perimeter around the residence, with Curry saying that the woman eventually left the home with a handgun, "and advanced on SWAT team members."
Gentry was hit by two rounds fired by a member of the SWAT team, and was then taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.
Curry says that the Kalispell Police Department was called in to investigate the shooting, as per department policy - adding that the deputy who shot Gentry has been placed administrative leave until the probe is finished.
