Starting next week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration gains authority to start regulating tobacco. The new powers come from the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act passed in 2009.
One of the first major changes is a ban on the use of words such as "light" and "mild," and in anticipation of the restrictions, cigarette manufacturers have already started changing their packaging.
The words light and mild are being replaced with color-coded packages.
Smokers' Express manager Mona Yeagley says the packaging does not matter, and that people will still get the cigarettes that they want.
"People figure things out pretty quickly when it comes to something they want. You won't be seeing any more lights or milds or ultralights or mediums, now they'll be colors," Yeagley said.
The color coding will vary depending on the brand; for example, one major brand's "lights" will now be gold packs, and the "mediums" are red packs.
